A dance flashmob has been organised in support of the Russian band Pussy Riot, on the eve of their trial verdicts. The band's members are in court in Moscow for singing a protest song in a church. The trial has been widely recognised both within and outside Russia as a disproportionate, politically-motivated case. The central Brighton event co-ordinated by the Brighton Feminist Collective is open to all who wish to show their support, and will involve participants spontaneously dancing to one of the band's songs before dispersing. A Brighton Feminist Collective spokesperson said: http://www.amnesty.org/en/news/russia-urged-release- pussy-riot-group-court-prolongs-detention-2012-07-20https://www.facebook.com/events/476321332380904/
In the last month or so, quite a few things have made us angry - both as individuals and as a group. Misrepresentation of feminism, anti-choicers, transphobia, bisexual-bashing, narrow-mindedness; just some of the things that have made us see red. Now whilst angry is a good place to be, its also good to take it and do something with it. So we have decided to start a video project, which is not only our way of addressing the bullshit that has come into our lives, but is also a way of giving people a voice - because sometimes it can ...
It was with a jubilant spirit that those of us representing Brighton Fem Col set off to London this Friday alongside Brighton Pro Choice and Red Rag Campaign. We were heading to Bedford Square, location for one of many BPAS clinics around the country that provide vital services for women and couples, but also arguably the frontline for the clash between Pro-Choice and Anti-Choice campaigners and the focus for much of the media reporting on this issue. On Friday evening supporters of 40 days for Life, an anti-choice group that has been carrying out vigils and protests outside various clinics, had turned out ...
I'm so amazed how far we've come, and how much support we've got from people and interest we've got from bands! It's been pretty stressful, and we're still ironing out the exact details of the program, but I can happily say that now we've selected a solid, eclectic line-up of four wonderful bands who have confirmed that they are playing: WebsiteTwitterSoundcloudFacebookBandcampFacebookSoundcloudFacebookinfo@brightonfeministcollective.org.uk ! And don't forget, earlier on in the evening we'll also have stalls from Brighton organisations and charities connected to the women's struggle. Check out the updated event page, complete with flyer! Also have a look at the Facebook Event and don't forget ...
This evening I have spent my time working on, among other things, the user registration process. It's quite simple in that you put some basic details in, hit submit, and then you activate using the link in the activation e-mail. Then you can log in and do currently pretty much nothing unless I make your user a writer (soon we will have a commenting system so users can comment on articles). Here's the registration URL: http://www.brightonfeministcollective.org.uk/register And, once I've set you up, this is the admin URL: http://www.brightonfeministcollective.org.uk/admin Where, depending on your agreed responsibilities, you will be able to write, ...
I've finally managed to get the site code into a usable state in so much as we can start writing articles, posting events, and adding pages. This is excellent, and members should contact me to create usernames and passwords. Editors, moderators, and administrators will be democratically selected. Code is very new, so expect there to be some teething issues.
